La signification de leur nom de scène : "The GOOD DIE Mostly Over Bullshit" ou encore "God Is Every Man Of Blackness".
Tous originaires d'Atlanta, membres du collectif Dungeon Family, on les a entendus sur le premier LP des collègues OutKast : "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" en 1994. Cee-Lo a quitté le groupe en 2000 pour entamer une carrière solo qui lui a permis de devenir bien connu du grand public (il est en effet la voix de Gnarls Barkley aux côtés du DJ Danger Mouse). En 1995 ils sortent leur debut-album :

Goodie Mob - Soul Food (1995)

Entièrement produit par Organized Noize, le disque porte bien son nom avec des textes conscients et engagés sur des instrus très riches (on est a des années lumières des synthés de Lil' Jon là...). On peut même considérer le groupe comme l'inventeur du terme "Dirty south" avec la track du même nom, la sortie de ce LP a contribué à mettre la scène rap d'Atlanta sur la carte, tout comme l'a fait "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" de OutKast. On y trouve l'ENORME "Cell therapy" entre autres superbes titres (perso je trouve qu'il y a rien à jeter sur ce disque), un très bon album CLASSIQUE, fondateur du style Dungeon Family dont on entendra parler encore de nombreuses années...

Goodie Mob - Still Standing (1998)

On reste dans la lignée du 1er LP avec ce disque produit par Organized Noize mais pas seulement : les tracks signées par Craig Love (Le soulful "Beautiful skin"), T-Mo (Le génial "Greeny green") ou DJ Muggs ("Inshallah") comptent parmi les moments forts du CD. Toujours les mêmes thèmes conscients et engagés, Cee-Lo chante de plus en plus, et on trouve un titre carrément rock à la fin : "Just about over". Bien entendu, la Dungeon Family (OutKast, Cool Breeze, Chiefton, Witchdoctor & Backbone) vient prêter main forte pour un très bon 2ème album.

Je connais vraiment pas le groupe mais le topic est bien ficelé et leur filiation donne envie de se pencher sur leurs discographies. Récemment je suis tombé sur une vidéo que j'ai bien kiffé où on voit 2pac accueillir Goodie Mob en studio alors qu'il enregistre le morceau Good Life (de Until The End Of Time, tuerie) :

et and le delire Organized Noise Productions, y'a COOLBREEZE....et son album Eastpoint's greatest hits.....j'ai decouvert y'a pas longtemps et c'est un bel album du genre....(1999 je crois)

Goodie Mob - World Party (1999)

Le faux-pas arrive après 2 albums impeccables, la pression dûe à la popularité grandissante des collègues OutKast et de l'attente suscitée par ces derniers autour de toute sortie estampillée Dungeon Family doit y être pour beaucoup. L'aspect "social" est quasiment absent de ce LP (les thèmes tournent autour de la fête :? ), on est plus dans les sonorités des livraisons précédentes, ici c'est plutôt "bling-bling" comme en témoignent les noms de certains producteurs (D-Dot AKA Tha Madd Rapper, Dallas Austin ou Kanye West) ou la présence de TLC sur "What it ain't (Ghetto enuff)", le groupe est même fortement critiqué pour tenir des propos homophobes dans "All A's". Cee-Lo quitte Goodie Mob à la suite de ce disque et mène une carrière solo en demi-teinte sous le nom de Cee-Lo Green avant de connaître un succès mondial au sein de Gnarls Barkley. Heureusement, quelques titres relèvent le niveau comme le très bon "ICU", "The dip" ou encore "Street corner" plus dans la veine Organized Noize (A noter la présence du vétéran Easy Moe Bee à la prod de "Fie fie delish"). Bref, pour conclure : un disque dispensable...

Goodie Mob - One Monkey Don't Stop No Show (2004)

Après 5 ans et une signature chez Koch, le 4ème album se fait sans Cee-Lo, d'ailleurs d'après les dires du groupe le monkey dont il est question dans le titre et sur la cover ne serait pas leur ex-partenaire mais représenterait plutôt la music industry. (Ouais ouais...) Organized Noize est (en partie) présent à la prod de 3 titres par le biais de Ray Murray, la majorité des tracks étant produite par un certain Speedy (Qui ?), on trouve aussi des sons signés DJ Paul (Three-6-Mafia), Cool & Dre ou le westsider J-Wells. L'absence du petit gros au crâne rasé spécialiste du déguisement se fait ressentir...
