Death Row Records : unreleased material

Music publisher EverGreen, which owns the catalogs of 2 Live Crew, Third Eye Blind, MC Hammer, Tupac Shakur and others, has signed a deal with WIDEawake, the Canada-based development company that acquired the assets of Death Row Records earlier this year, to be the worldwide administration company of the legendary rap label. As part of a long-term arrangement, EverGreen will administer and handle licensing for all of the compositions and master recordings in the Death Row catalog, as well as the processing of all mechanical and performance royalties in the catalog.

"After purchasing the Death Row catalog in January, WIDEawake began looking for a partner to help monetize their rights," David Schulhof, co-CEO of EverGreen, tells Billboard.com. "We already had a relationship through the estate of Tupac Shakur; WIDEawake was looking for an exclusive boutique company to help focus on licensing in the film, television, video game and ad world; and because we own the catalogs of Tupac and 2 Live Crew and Teddy Riley and others, they knew we already had experience in the genre. So, it just felt like the obvious choice for them to partner up with us for Death Row."

With the new joint venture, WIDEawake extends EverGreen's rights to market, promote and collect royalties on all the copyrights and master recordings in the Death Row catalog, including more than 10,000 released and unreleased songs by such artists as Tupac, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Tha Dogg Pound, Kurupt, Daz Dillinger and Nate Dogg, to list a few. It also includes never-before released albums by Crooked I, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, RBX, The Lady of Rage, Warren G, K-Solo, Danny Boy and DJ Quick, among others.

So far, EverGreen/WIDEawake has licensed tracks like "Nuttin' But A G Thang," "California Love" and "Gin N Juice" for television shows and movies. Evergreen also got new artists -- although he wouldn't reveal who -- to record remixes of a number of songs from the catalogs for several video games. "We are now a one-stop, which makes it easy to clear," says Schulhof. "If anyone in the film, tv, ad or video game world wanted to pick up any Death Row song, we control both sides of the equation so It'd be easy."

In addition, Death Row is expected to generate a number of new releases in the near future, like a new album of unreleased Tupac material to commemorate the rapper's June 2010 birthday. The as-yet-untitled album will be distributed by E-1 stateside and EMI overseas. Other forthcoming releases include a collector's edition rerelease of "The Chronic Re-Lit," slated for a September 1, 2009 street date. The album will feature four bonus tracks - all unreleased master from Death Row - plus a DVD with never before seen video footage of Dr. Dre and other artists. WIDEawake/Death Row will also release several box sets this holiday season, including a four CD collection of previously unreleased Death Row master recordings, never before seen images and video footage.

As well, WIDEawake/Death Row will launch a new brand extension called Hustle City, which will debut first as a graphic novel including a CD insert of music related to the story line. "Our goal is to continually breathe new life into Death Row," said Lavi, adding that aside from the graphic novel series, they also plan on releasing comic books, animated webisodes, a feature film and games under the Hustle City powered by Death Row music brand.

WIDEawake Entertainment Group snapped up Death Row Records from bankruptcy for $18 million in January. Lara Lavi, the company's founder and CEO, is a lawyer, songwriter and entrepreneur, who founded the company in 2006 to work in a variety of media, including film and music. WIDEawake has distribution in Canada through Universal Music.

Et le quadruple disque d'inédits, ça je lâche les biftons direct... Espérons qu'ils tiennent leurs promesses, et que ça mette pas 20 plombes à sortir.
Le seul truc qui m'inquiète là de suite, c'est l'éventualité qu'ils sortent quelques merdouilles pour tester le marché, que ça vende que dalle, et qu'au final ils décident de pas sortir le reste. Ca peut arriver, et ce serait vraiment râlant parce que pour une fois, j'ai l'impression qu'on est plus très loin d'avoir accès à des quantités de morceaux & albums inédits.

Il y'a pas mal d'album qui sont restés dans les caisses de Death Row dans les années 90 notamment un album de Danny Boy, des tracks de Dj Quik et l'album du LBC Crew... ce serait vraiment pas mal que ça finisse enfin a sortir.

Il devrait y avoir un album de Johnny Jackson et 2pac qui doit normalement sortir aussi, avec des prods inédites. normalement ça aurait du sortir le 16 juin pour l'anniv de 2 pac mais afeni a encore foutu la merde dedans a ce que j'ai pu entendre. Il y avait d'ailleurs un moment une pochette de l'album sur son myspace mais elle y est plus la..

Moi j'aimerai bien savoir si il y a des morceaux qui ont été préparé pour la bo Murder was the case mais qui n'ont pas été retenu au final, car a mon avis ces morceaux la doivent faire très très mal. Et bien sur le westcoast aftershock dont le seul morceau Me in Your World est connu

Je sais pas où le mec à pécho tout ça, et même si y a pas mal de trucs déjà plus ou moins connus (mais avec des bonus en plus, genre le couplet de Cube sur Nuthin' But The Cavi Hit), y en a qui donnent clairement envie, comme l'album de NOTR, la track que le mec fait écouter dans sa video n°7 circule, sauf que lui il a l'air de l'avoir en bonne qualité, donc peut-être a-t-il vraiment cet album. C'est un enfoiré si c'est le cas !

Pour les unreleased DR, ça fait rêver c'est sûr, mais entre les annonces et ce qui sort en général y a souvent un fossé, pour pas dire un gouffre des fois.

Je sais pas si il y en a qui l'avaient déjà, mais voilà l'original de Rat-tat-tat-tat de Dr Dre en bonne qualité quand même, avec le sample de Don Julian "Janitzio". Dre ne l'a pas gardé pour son album The Chronic, mal lui en a pris sérieux car cette track originale est 1 000 000 de fois mieux que celle dans The Chronic !!! Finalement c'est Warren G qui a repris ce sample pour sa track "And Ya Dont Stop" sur son classique Regulate G Funk Era. Et il a bien fait.

perso je trouve que l'ambiance que dégage l'instru de celle sur the chronic colle plus avec les paroles, là ça fait limite joyeux, l'autre c'est plus crade, c'est plus inquiétant et plus incisif, c'est ça que j'aime sur the chronic (et qui fait que je le préfère à Doggystyle), l'alternance entre morceaux G-Funk et autres morceaux plus raw comme Rat-Tat-Tat, A Nigga Wit A Gun, Lyrical Gang Bang, The Day The Niggas Took Over, Bitches Ain't Shit, High Powered, etc. ça donne un album vraiment varié et complet.

Dans le même esprit, y avait un titre en qualité super pourrie qui tournait (soi-disant l'original de The Next Episode) avec l'instru de Runnin' Wit' No Breaks mais un poil modifiée (et mieux je trouve). C'est typiquement le genre de titres qui pourraient être terribles à mettre sur les unreleased (si jamais ça existe en bonne qualité)

This package includes the sixteen original Chronic songs digitally re-mastered, profound liner notes from one of Dr. Dre’s long time colleagues and friends, award winning producer and documentary film maker Quincy Jones III, plus a second DVD collection entitled From The Vault. This DVD is packed with Chronic videos, promotional pieces, and a special never before released 30 minute in studio interview with Dr. Dre discussing the future of hip hop. But that’s not all – the From The Vault DVD includes Seven unreleased and rare release songs from Snoop Doggy Dogg, soulstress Jewell, CPO, and Kurupt.
