The first thing I noticed when I looked at the tracklist for Oakland rapper Renz Julian’s new album, “Armageddon”, was the solid list of features. He has some of the Bay’s biggest names on there with The Jacka, E-40, Clyde Carson, & Big Rich. This may be what initially motivates listeners to give this album a try, but it is Renz Julian’s lyrics and concepts that will have people wanting to hear more. You can tell that a lot of thought and effort went into this album and it shows from the results.
The intro sets a dark tone for the album, which is appropriate for a CD titled Armageddon. On the track Armageddon, Renz Julian paints a picture of a world that is falling apart. On Draft Day he mentions his attempt at a football career and the effect it had on his life. This track is followed by a pair of club bangers that help balance out the album.
Customer features one of the many great beats on this album and Renz Julian provides solid lyrics to go along with it. One For The Money is a story about gold diggers. Picture This is the opposite of the first song, with Renz Julian painting a picture of the ideal world. Most of the rest of the album is about survival. Renz Julian is best when he tells stories, something I’d like to see more artists do. I wasn’t impressed with the two songs featuring member of Mob Figaz and a couple of other tracks, but overall, this is a solid album you shouldn’t sleep on.
