PROFILE : Freddie Gibbs
YRB Magazine a écrit:Last week we threw up some footage of Freddie performing on a rooftop in BK. In part two of our Freddie feature, Gangsta Gibbs talks about surviving between label deals, how Just Blaze changed the way he raps and GQ magazine's claim that Wale, Drake and Kid Cudi killed gangster rap.
Maurice Garland a écrit:Gary, Ind., is known for the Jackson family, steel mills and being that part of the Chicago metropolis where police don’t venture. But over the last year, rapper Freddie Gibbs has brought a little bit of light to the cloudy city, even though the sunshine is coming all the way from Los Angeles.
“I’m out here to take care of my family back home and that’s it,” says Gibbs via cell phone. He relocated to L.A. in 2006 when he got signed to Interscope Records. He’s since parted ways with the label and is now independent. “I got good family and good people that I keep in touch with, so I’m not worried about changing into something I’m not.”
While Gary doesn’t have any professional sports teams with fitted caps for Gibbs to represent with, his music is doing a good job with putting his town on the map. Last year, Gibbs released two critically-acclaimed mixtapes, The Miseducation of Freddie Gibbs and Midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik. His honest commentary on life at the bottom resonated with listeners tired of the typical ’hood images that ironically tend to lean more toward “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.”
“Rappers make it seem like every black person in the ’hood sells coke or that every person selling drugs is a baller,” says Gibbs. “We have youngsters getting misguided by the rap. I ain’t saying its wrong to rap about drugs, I’m saying we have to do it in a responsible way.”
Gibbs’ music has also garnered him a growing following in Atlanta, having worked with local undergdogs Pill, Sean Falyon and DJ Burn One. The acceptance is a far cry from the welcome he received during a brief stint in Atlanta three years ago.
“Muthafuckas tried to take me out the game at Central Station,” Gibbs says with a chuckle, referring to the time his car got shot up in the nightclub’s parking lot. He talks briefly about the episode on his song “Iodine Poison.” “I was coming in other niggas’ areas getting my hustle on, doing dumb flashy shit.”
Lesson learned, Gibbs hopes the only pops he hears this time around come from the speakers.
